The State Secretary at the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office, Ms. Paula Lehtomäki, discussed the portfolio of joint activities between Finland and IIASA with IIASA Director General and CEO, Professor Dr Pavel Kabat and the Finnish Environment Institute Director General and IIASA Council Member for Finland, Dr Lea Kauppi on 5 September 2016. The meeting focused on IIASA’s new Arctic Futures Initiative (AFI) which aims to conduct a holistic, integrative assessment of plausible futures of the Arctic, cutting across different disciplines and individual countries’ strategic interests. Director General Kabat also briefly met and discussed the new initiative with Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä.

The briefings took place during the Nordic seminar: Arctic Expertise in Nordic Cooperation (NordArc2016) organized by the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office to increase cooperation between academia, political decision makers and public servants. The event included a session on the preparation for Finland's forthcoming chairmanship of the Arctic Council, which Kabat described as, “something that the Arctic Futures Initiative can make a highly positive contribution toward."
