To share expertise and developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the French Aerospace Lab ONERA (Office national d'études et de recherches aérospatiales) are working together in a joint virtual research centre. More than 50 scientists have once again exchanged ideas about AI in aerospace. At the virtual workshop, the participants presented more than 20 topics from doctoral theses and projects. The DLR Institute for AI Safety and Security also presented itself.

Among other things, the workshop addressed how robots in spaceflight can explore extreme and hostile environments. The use of AI in time series of Earth observation data was another key topic. Several lectures focused on the modelling of aerodynamic simulations, the combination of data sources and the cooperation between humans and AI. The AI-supported development of aircraft was also on the agenda.

The first joint research topics were defined in April 2020 at the launch event for the virtual research centre 'DLR-ONERA Joint Virtual Center AI4Aerospace Engineering (AI4AE)'. DLR and ONERA had previously agreed to intensify their cooperation in AI research at the Paris Air Show in 2019.
