The contribution will help enhance the sustainability and productivity of the fish and seafood sector

November 10, 2020 - Quebec City, Quebec

The governments of Canada and Quebec are announcing funding of close to $2 million to improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of Quebec’s fish and seafood sector. The Government of Canada’s contribution to these seven projects amounts to $1,637,943, and the Government of Quebec’ contribution is $189,672.

For five years, the Quebec Fisheries Fund (QFF) will support projects in the areas of innovation, science partnerships, commercial fisheries infrastructure, aquaculture, and processing, which increase the value of high‑quality fish and seafood products from sustainable sources, and help position Quebec’s fish and seafood sector for continued long‑term growth.

The combined contributions of the federal and provincial governments total $42.8 million in investments in the QFF, which will create opportunities and increase the market value of high‑quality fish and seafood products from sustainable practices in Quebec.

Quotes

“By participating in the Quebec Fisheries Fund, the Government of Canada is committed to stimulating innovation in the fish and seafood sector, while contributing on the one hand, to the creation of good jobs for the middle class and, on the other hand, to the growth of businesses in Quebec communities.”

The Honourable Bernadette Jordan
Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard

“The funding announced today will help fish harvesters and seafood sector workers in the region innovate work processes and technologies to better manage stocks, protect the environment, and ensure the sustainability of their work. I will continue to promote the needs of the fisheries sector, it is a fundamental sector of economic development in Gaspésie—Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine.”

The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier
Minister of National Revenue

“The commercial fisheries and aquaculture industry operates in a highly competitive business environment, both domestically and in export markets. To remain competitive, companies in the sector must constantly innovate in order to adapt to the needs of consumers and the demands of markets and society, especially in terms of sustainable development. As such, the funding we are announcing today is a fine example of collaboration between Quebec, Canada and industry stakeholders in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. ”
