Opportunity to meet two Goldman Prize winners honored for extraordinary achievements in ocean conservation and forest rights

WASHINGTON – World Resources Institute (WRI) will host conversations with two of the inspiring 2019 Goldman Environmental Prize winners, days after this year’s winners were revealed today. Come to WRI for a rare chance to meet two of the winners in person during two intimate gatherings.

On Wednesday, May 1 at 12:30 p.m. 2019 Goldman Prize winner for Islands and Island Nations Jacqueline Evans will join a conversation on Action for the Ocean with Goldman Foundation Executive Director Michael Sutton and WRI Vice President Craig Hanson. Jacqueline is being honored for her grassroots campaign to conserve and protect all 763,000 square miles of the Cook Island’s ocean territory, including the designation of 125,000 square miles as marine protected areas.

On Thursday, May 2 at 1:30 p.m., meet 2019 Goldman Prize winner for Africa Alfred Brownell. Under threat of violence, the environmental lawyer stopped the clear-cutting of Liberia’s tropical forests by palm oil plantation developers. His campaign protected 513,500 acres of primary forest that constitute one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. For his safety, he is living in temporary exile in the United States and you have a rare chance to hear him speak at WRI on Activism for Land Rights with WRI’s Director of Land and Resource Rights, Peter Veit.

The Goldman Environmental Prize recognizes individuals who have undertaken significant efforts to protect their communities and the environment, often at great personal risk. The prize is one of the most prestigious environmental awards in the world, which honors activists from six continents each year. Winners were announced on April 29, 2019 in San Francisco. #GoldmanPrize30
