PARIS – The International Energy Agency on Monday held a meeting of the IEA Energy Business Council, which brings together representatives of the world’s largest energy companies to review the state of the global energy system.

Executives from more than 50 companies representing the oil and gas sector, renewables, power and utilities, manufacturers and energy-intensive industries attended the meeting. Delegates came from around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, the European Union, Japan, Korea, Mexico and the United States.

Participants reviewed the latest developments in global oil and gas markets, policy developments  in key countries including China and recent technological innovations in the energy field. The meeting also discussed plans for the IEA to increase the focus it puts on Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS), and the petro-chemicals industry.

The aim of the EBC is to promote dialogue among the IEA, business community and policymakers on a broad range of cross-cutting issues that have implications for the global energy system. It is the overarching body through which the IEA interacts with the energy business community.

The last IEA Ministerial Meeting, in November, tasked the IEA with working in collaboration with industry to deepen global energy dialogue.

“A regular exchange of views between the IEA and the energy industry is instrumental in being able to fulfill our core mandates,” said Dr Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director.
