Melbourne Fashion Week (31 August to 7 September 2018) is the first fashion event to be certified carbon neutral by the Australian Government. The week-long event is one of the largest fashion events in Australia with around 69,000 attendees in 2017 and a projected number of 74,000 in 2018. As a large and therefore emissions intensive event, Melbourne Fashion Week is an opportunity to showcase City of Melbourne’s dedication to sustainability through carbon neutral certification.

As part of its operational Emissions Reduction Plan, City of Melbourne - itself a carbon neutral certified organisation - is working to reduce Melbourne’s carbon footprint across a range of activities. Melbourne Fashion Week’s certification is one event in the City of Melbourne’s 2018 carbon neutral event portfolio.

To achieve carbon neutral certification projected emissions for the event were calculated based on data collected at previous similar events. Areas for emissions reduction were identified. Any unavoidable emissions will be offset by investing in a Western Australian savannah burning project and a renewable energy project in China.
