UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has emphasised its support for improvements in the research environment by reaffirming its signatory status to the Concordat to Support Research Integrity.

Published by Universities UK, the concordat seeks to provide a national framework for good research conduct and its governance.

The concordat provides principles and commitments to ensure that research produced by or in collaboration with universities, research institutes and others undertaking research is underpinned by the highest standards of rigour and integrity. It provides the standards expected of all stakeholders, identifying five commitments that all those engaged with research must be able to make.

Last year the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee identified a number of causes for concern in the area of research integrity, including poor levels of compliance with the Concordat to Support Research Integrity and recommended that the concordat was updated and strengthened by making the requirements and expectations clearer.

As a signatory, UKRI has worked closely with the Signatories Group in the revision of the concordat, clarifying the requirements across all areas, addressing issues highlighted by the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee research integrity inquiry, including the training on ethics and research integrity, and on the processes for surfacing and investigating misconduct.

UK Research and Innovation Chief Executive Professor Sir Mark Walport said: “An inclusive and responsible research culture is a key component of excellence, and one that is essential to maintaining public trust in the work produced by our communities.

“The revised Concordat to Support Research Integrity reaffirms UK Research and Innovation’s commitment to upholding the highest standards across the research and innovation landscape.”
