The Government of India’s National Institute for Transforming India, (NITI) Aayog, has officially endorsed The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative as a crucial platform for driving corporate leadership on electric transport.

This comes ahead of the MOVE Summit, the Government of India’s first ever global summit on mobility taking place in New Delhi, India. The Climate Group will here host a high-level discussion, bringing together EV100 members and Indian state leaders to accelerate India’s path toward electric, accessible and decarbonized transport systems.

Jarnail Singh, India Director, The Climate Group said, “The electric mobility opportunity for India is huge. However, sequencing of actions is key to realize it. Early actions by businesses to create demand are set to increase policymakers’ confidence, who, in return, will create an enabling environment for a long-term transition.”

Companies jumpstarting India’s energy transition

EV100 is a global leadership initiative, bringing together influential businesses committed to a future of electric transport. Through the initiative, companies commit to transition their fleets to electric vehicles and install charging infrastructure at their corporate sites.

Indian EV100 members have taken bold steps to kick off the electro-mobility market in India. Wipro plans to transition nearly 2,000 vehicles to electric across Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. With a network of more than 22,000 branches across India, State Bank of India will transition its vehicle fleet to EVs in major cities by 2030. As part of this commitment, the bank will also set up charging stations in major residential spaces to support the uptake of EVs by staff.

Delhi-based utility company BYPL has gone one step further with a pilot to study the performance of EVs for utility services, along with manufacturers, fleet owners and service providers. BYPL will also deliver awareness programs for its 1.6 million customers in New Delhi on the benefits of EVs in reducing air pollution levels.

IKEA Group has committed to transition to electric vehicles across its entire global fleet by 2030. Within the first year of opening its new store in Hyderabad, the furniture giant will transition 20% of its local delivery fleet to electric vehicles whilst also installing on-site solar rooftop panels on the store to power its operations.

Stepping up action for the MOVE Summit

At the MOVE Summit, The Climate Group will convene these leading EV100 members, other global businesses and leaders from Indian states to accelerate electrification of transport in India.

Jarnail Singh commented: “This roundtable at the MOVE Summit will mark the beginning of influential businesses coming together with policymakers to create an ecosystem-wide action agenda. Through our EV100 initiative and state-level policy actions, The Climate Group aims to complement the Government of India’s mission towards cleaner mobility”.

The MOVE Summit comes just ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit, which will see global state, region, city and business leaders gathering to step up action on energy and electric vehicle leadership.
