To thin or not to thin: That is the question
GROVELAND, Calif. — The 2013 Rim Fire turned a vast swath of the Stanislaus National Forest into a "moonscape" where Forest Service officials said pine trees might not return for a generation. But five years later, ponderosa pine saplings have taken root amid the blackened trunks here and with them a big question: Are forests healthier and safer if humans mostly leave them alone?
