The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) Stormwater Institute joins other stormwater experts in implementing Stormwater Currency, a program that advances green infrastructure through market-based incentives.

Municipalities need a sustainable source of funding to implement individual projects or comprehensive programs to successfully manage stormwater challenges. Stormwater Currency supports the development of sustainable funding programs that increase private sector participation while improving the environment and providing benefits to the public.

Program partners, WEF, American Rivers (Washington, D.C.), and Corona Environmental Consulting (Rockland, Mass.), with funding from the Great Lakes Protection Fund (Evanston, Ill.), are working to develop community-based solutions that leverage public and private sector resources for green infrastructure. The program builds expertise, improves policies, conducts training sessions, and connects local stakeholders to advance financing solutions to stormwater problems.

Currently, the program is working in Grand Rapids, Mich., to develop a stormwater credit trading system and with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (Cleveland) to optimize the existing green infrastructure grant program. Community-based funding approaches can increase the use of green infrastructure.
