Geneva, 4 February 2019: Phoenix is a global value chain manager of commodities in the agrifood and natural resource industries and is the world’s second largest rice-trader. With two divisions, Phoenix Agrifoods and Phoenix Resources, the company has over 4,000 customers worldwide, which it serves through 22 offices connecting 70 origin and destination countries. Phoenix employs over 2,500 people around the globe.

Phoenix uses a comprehensive, end-to-end approach that oversees commodities exchanges from upstream (origination, farming, strategic investment) to midstream (sourcing, marketing, charting and port logistics) through to downstream (control of destination, storage, processing and brand management). Their key commodities include rice, sugar, grains and feeds, pulses and fresh produce. Phoenix also was recognized for its sustainability initiatives as “Sustainable Company of the Year 2018” at Meet The Farmers Conference held at Dubai.

By connecting with WBCSD’s network of forward-thinking businesses across a variety of sectors, Phoenix can make a true impact on global corporate sustainability.

Gaurav Dhawan, Executive Chairman of the Phoenix Group said: “We are delighted to join WBCSD and to become part of this critical commitment to accelerating the transition to a sustainable world. As a global agrifoods company, our business touches many products and people around the world, and we are keen to play a key role in transforming the food and land system globally. We are particularly interested in WBCSD’s innovative work in relation to food, land and water, and we look forward to reducing the environmental footprint of our products and enhance our social impact through our businesses.”

WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker said: “WBCSD is pleased to welcome Phoenix as our newest member. We are dedicated to working towards of a transformation of the key systems across society, and this can only be achieved in collaboration with companies across the full value chain. With a pivotal influence across global commodities value chains, Phoenix has an exceptional opportunity to deliver sustainability impacts globally. We are excited to see how we can jointly help to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world.”

In addition, Gaurav Dhawan was elected Chair of the Global Agribusiness Alliance (GAA), a WBCSD sector project, launched at the end of 2016. The GAA has grown to a group of key supply-side companies who have come together to work in a pre-competitive space to strengthen their contribution to tackling shared challenges as well as make an additional contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
