Taylor & Francis announces the launch of a new open access journal which aims to revolutionize our understanding of the Earth’s systems. Big Earth Data, published with the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), encourages researchers across a range of disciplines who are using a growing body of large data sets to make new discoveries in Earth Science.

Big Earth Data joins Taylor & Francis’ respected Earth Science program, including the International Journal of Digital Earth, enhancing existing offerings in this area, while furthering our commitment to open scholarship. The purpose of the society is to promote international cooperation around the ‘Digital Earth’ vision – an extensive virtual representation of the Earth, and enable Digital Earth technology to play a role in economic and social sustainable development, environmental protection, disaster mitigation, natural resources conservation and the improvement of human beings' living standards.

Lyndsey Dixon, Regional Editorial Journals Director at Taylor & Francis, said:

“We’re proud to launch Big Earth Data with the International Society for Digital Earth to help accelerate Earth Science research, and advocate the critical role data sharing and open data plays in advancing knowledge.”

Prof. Huadong Guo, Editor-in-Chief of Big Earth Data and President of the International Society for Digital Earth, said:

“Our society is delighted to launch Big Earth Data, a sister journal of the International Journal of Digital Earth, driving discovery in Earth Science forwards through a high-quality platform that publishes and promotes open data and data-intensive science.”

The announcement of Big Earth Data has been warmly welcomed by the community:

"ISDE's journal, Big Earth Data, is tailor-made for the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). Not only are our members contributing articles to the journal, they are often the providers and users of this big data for which the articles are written. Big Earth Data, ISDE and GEO go hand-in-hand in transforming how the Earth is viewed and understood.” - Dr. Steven Ramage, Head of External Relations, GEO.

“We needed this journal to outline the role of Big Earth Data and Digital Earth in our society and global dimensionalities.”  - Dr. Stefano Nativi of National Research Council of Italy

"This new scientific journal will be a timely outlet for researchers to present their results of the many aspects involved in this new field of Big Earth Data, such as on new innovative methodologies for handling and processing the very large EO data sets, as well as publishing on the new tools, and algorithms needed to extract the relevant information." - John van Genderen, Emeritus Professor of University of Twente.
