This conference, which will see PML actively participating, will be solutions-focused and include plenary meetings, 7 partnership dialogues and a special event commemorating World Oceans Day.

Partnership dialogue 3, chaired by Monaco and Mozambique, will focus on Ocean Acidification and include a presentation by PML’s Dr Turley (https://oceanconference.un.org/PartnershipDialogue3). On the eve of this dialogue, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will lead on a side event focusing on ocean acidification and what can be done about it; with organising partners, amongst others, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and PML.

Looking to engage across conference participants, PML and its international partners/initiatives* will also be present with an exhibition stand highlighting the status, risks and options for sustainable development in relation to the impact on the environment and society from the combined stressors of ocean acidification, rising sea temperatures, sea level rise and deoxygenation.

Contributing to SDG14

Plymouth Marine Laboratory is contributing directly to the SDG14 through the delivery of its science plan which delivers cutting-edge research in the marine environment to address societal challenges of relevance worldwide.

All of PML’s research projects are delivered with a multitude of partners and stakeholders, while several UK funded initiatives in the Western Indian Ocean and South East Asia, which are newly started or imminent projects, illustrate our commitment to SDG14 and will demonstrate the impact of our research globally. They include:

1. Building socio-ecological resilience to coral reef degradation in the islands of the Western Indian Ocean - We will focus on creating a network of expert stakeholders from the UK, Mauritius, Zanzibar and other islands in the WIO to scope opportunities for using Ecosystem Services related research to define and refine strategies and priorities for building socio-ecological resilience to long-term change in coral reefs.

2. Empowering community-based management of mangrove fisheries and implement Earth and sea observation applications for Malaysia - For the sustainable use of regional fisheries this project will apply the nexus approach to improve management of mangrove fishery resources in Malaysia with the aim of strengthening the livelihoods of fishery dependent communities and effective fishery resource management.

3. Ocean research for developing economies, in particular addressing challenges of coastal community - Development of improved environmental information to inform risk assessment, adaptive spatial management and mitigation strategies to provide partner countries with an improved capability for integrated and sustainable management of marine activities.

4. Building capacity for integrated planning through sustainable interactions with marine ecosystems for the health, wellbeing, food and livelihoods of coastal communities - We will develop interdisciplinary research capability and lasting collaborations that: facilitate innovative application of integrated planning in the marine environment within the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme and other marine parks and their communities in South East Asia, and respond to the SDGs of no poverty, zero hunger, and good health and well-being for coastal communities through the sustainable use of marine resources. https://oceanconference.un.org/commitments/?id=14995
