The research councils and Innovate UK, who from 1 April will become part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), have today published their gender pay reports. 

The publication of the reports shows a variety of issues that we need to address. There is currently a pay gap in favour of men across all organisations when considering the mean hourly pay, ranging from 2.6% in ESRC to 26% in Innovate UK. Similar results extend to the median hourly pay gap in favour of men, ranging from 36% in Innovate UK to 0% in ESRC, 0.4% in AHRC and EPSRC respectively. 

Commenting on the publication of the reports, Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation said:

"The publication of these gender pay reports demonstrate there is a job to be done to identify and share effective practice in equality, diversity and inclusion across the whole of UK Research and Innovation. I’m pleased to say that work has already begun. UKRI is developing a culture and working environment that treats everyone with dignity and respect, and provides equal opportunities to flourish and succeed. We will build on good practice in the councils as well as draw on the existing wider evidence base where it exists to address any gender pay gap in UKRI.

"We also recognise that the wider evidence base on gender pay needs to be strengthened so that we and others can draw on it in seeking to address these challenges, and will be funding work on that in future.

"UK Research and Innovation also has the opportunity to show leadership across the wider sector. The Shadow Board have made clear they take equality, diversity and inclusion very seriously and it is an integral part of the UKRI vision."

In the next annual reporting period (2018-19), UKRI will consolidate the data into a UKRI report presenting the whole picture as a new organisation.
