Why did previous international biodiversity conservation frameworks partially fail?

How should the new framework be designed to answer the pressing challenge of global biodiversity loss?

What role should the Future Earth scientific community play in that process?

If, like many of us, these questions keep you awake at night, this series of webinars is made for you!

Through its commitment to engage with science-policy processes and the work of its Knowledge-Action Network on Natural Assets, Future Earth, along with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), is organising two webinars on the Fourteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP14) and the post-2020 Biodiversity Framework, before and after the event.

As the Aichi targets come to an end in 2020, we are left with the CBD’s 2050 Vision: “by 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people” ("Living in Harmony with Nature", CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020). Looking back at and learning from the last decade brings important questions for the biodiversity scientific community as to how this vision can be achieved and through which knowledge and tools. Future Earth and the CBD recently joined forces in that regard.

These webinars are aimed at the wider Future Earth community and anyone interested in international biodiversity policies.

The objective of these webinars is two-fold:

1. To present and discuss the results of a consultation organised by Future Earth and CNRS on the post-2020 Biodiversity Framework before submission to the CBD on December 15.

2. To discuss the involvement of the Future Earth community in the CBD COP, before and after the event (November 14-29).

Webinar 1 - November 8, 2018 (14:00-15:00, Coordinated Universal Time, UTC)

A discussion on the post-2020 biodiversity framework and preparing for CBD COP14
