The 2022 Induction Workshop for newly appointed Permanent Representatives (PRs) to the WMO was held online on 17 and 18 May in two separate time zone groups in the six official languages of the United Nations.

After welcoming the 30 new PRs, WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas highlighted the achievements of the WMO Reform, introduced some new initiatives and outlined the climate status. WMO Deputy Secretary-General Elena Manaenkova and Assistant Secretary-General Wenjian Zhang presented information on WMO governance, General Regulations, constituent bodies, budget and finance. WMO directors made informative presentations on the activities carried out in each department.

In addition to the PRs, 45 NMHS staff members, including several hydrological advisors, attended the sessions. In total 44 Members were represented. Eight of the PRs were from Least Developed Countries (LDC) and ten from Small-Island Developing States (SIDS).

Familiarization visits for newly appointed PRs are a regular WMO Education and Training activity and in-person visit will resume in September. These visits increase two-way interaction with WMO Executive Management and technical departments and foster collaboration. The visit helps new PRs understand the work of WMO and the Secretariat, as well as their own critical roles within the Organization.

The online workshops have facilitated wider outreach with PR and senior managers of NMHSs and will be maintained in order to continue to reach as many as possible.
