Beirut / Amman, 01 July 2022 – Jordan’s Ministry of Environment, the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), and the National Agriculture Research Center (NARC) with the support of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre have concluded a three-day capacity-building workshop held in Amman on climate change and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The workshop aimed at enhancing institutional capacity on climate action and the NDCs. It gathered more than 35 focal points of the technical working groups of the national climate change committee from different ministries and governmental agencies of Jordan.

“The workshop is the first in a series of national capacity-building events and workshops that will be held as part of the NDC Action Project,” said Sami Dimassi, UNEP Representative and Regional Director for West Asia. “Jordan has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 31% by 2030. This can only be achieved through a better understanding of climate mitigation and adaptation concepts and actions, while capturing lessons learnt from previous actions. Through this workshop, we are aiming at enhancing the country's readiness for the implementation of their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and measuring NDC costings with a focus on two sectors: water for agriculture and solid waste, in addition to other cross-cutting topics relevant to NDCs”, Mr. Dimassi added.

With the climate change and NDC work acquired knowledge through the workshop, participants will be able to plan their next steps and future involvement in the Kingdom’s action to meet its commitments.

“The workshop was a great opportunity for me to better understand climate change and adaptation possibilities. I have also acquired additional knowledge about funding sources and procedures. I will surely use these to mobilize climate finance,” said Bassem Suleiman, from the Greater Amman Municipality.

The NDC Action Project is a joint initiative between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and its collaborating centre the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC), with funding from the International Climate Initiative of the German Government. It is a transformative effort to improve action and ambition on climate change. It supports 10 countries to fulfill the climate mitigation and adaptation commitments agreed as part of the Paris Agreement.
