正文(英文) | OBSERVER: Copernicus in the European Year of Youth
To invest in Europe’s future is to invest in Europe's youth. Embracing this motto, 2022 has been declared the European Year of Youth. This initiative, aligned with the 2019-2027 European Union Youth Strategy and the European Youth Goals objectives, aims to promote opportunities, and engage young people to become active citizens and actors of change. In areas as distinct as health, climate change, the environment, security and defence, Europe is facing evolving and pressing challenges for which the youth’s perspective plays an important role in creating innovative solutions. For a better, greener, more inclusive, and digital Europe, this year the European Commission organises events, training, competitions, conferences, and academic opportunities for children, students, and young professionals to enable them to learn about societal challenges, share their visions, meet other people, and participate to enriching activities across Europe. Lessons learned from this programme will enable the youth to conceptually and practically take steps toward protecting and restoring Europe’s natural environment. In this context, the Copernicus component of the EU Space Programme provides key inputs that can help service providers, public authorities, and other institutions make decisions for improving European citizens' quality of life. Additionally, Copernicus represents a portal for young people to become engaged in or with the space sector and learn about the benefits it brings in the social, economic and environmental spheres, to mention just a few. This year will mark a shift for the young generation in Europe and Copernicus is ready for it! A series of event, initiatives and educational materials tailored to the youth demonstrate Copernicus’ active contribution to the European Year of Youth! Copernicus initiatives for the youth GIS4Schools: Paving the way for the school of tomorrow
GIS4Schools aims at promoting a new innovative approach to foster the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in secondary schools. This objective will be pursued by allowing pupils to learn about GIS technology and how to use GIS to respond to climate change challenges. Copernicus Earth Observation data will be used by pupils in the co-creation process of GIS-based products. This will represent one of the first structured, scalable, and replicable example of satellite data being used by pupils in secondary schools! The event “GIS4Schools: Paving the way for the school of tomorrow” will take place on 8 April 2022 from 10:00 to 13:00 CET, at the European Space Agency premises in Paris. The participants will discuss the need for innovative STEM learning paths to help the children improve their critical thinking and increase their interest in STEM disciplines. To register, visit the GIS4Schools website.
“Copernicus Days, better living on Earth” Event
In October 2021, Cité de l'espace, a scientific discovery centre based in Toulouse, in southwestern France, and focussed on promotion of space applications with the public at large, organised the "Copernicus Days, Mieux habiter la Terre" event, a weeklong event from 20-24 October 2021, to enable young people to discover the world largest and most successful Earth Observation system. The event gathered companies, schools, and the general public around the topic of Copernicus data usage and activities related to Earth Observation. Through films, exhibitions, round tables, and workshops, the participants had a chance to meet representatives of the Copernicus Marine, Climate and Land Monitoring services. The successful outcome of the event encouraged Cité de l’espace to organise a new edition of the event in 2022, on 21-25 May. The centre is open to visitors and its website is always updated with relevant news on the space world.
NEREUS: Satellites and Schools Meetings
The Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies (NEREUS), a European association focused on promoting the use of space technologies and their applications, organises the Satellite and Schools meetings. The meetings provide an opportunity for representatives from education and business backgrounds to share best practices and exchange experiences, information, and knowledge on initiatives to bring space closer to schools. Copernicus MOOC
Designed as a platform hosting open educational resources, the Copernicus MOOC offers students from all paths of life—scientists, policymakers, teachers, professionals, school or university students, casual learners—free online courses. Such MOOC courses address a range of EO topics affecting Europe’s sustainable future and demonstrate how one can take advantage of the full, free, and open access to the data policy. The Copernicus MOOC addresses three key topics:
Copernicus for Ocean Science learning The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) supports NGOs and universities in developing their ocean literacy to raise awareness about the ocean. Among various topics, they focus on ocean plastic drift, ocean and global warming, marine species migrations. The following non-profit users of Copernicus Marine data and forecasts demonstrate the crucial role of operational oceanography in supporting education of younger generations and especially building general knowledge to foster sustainable and healthy practices benefiting the ocean:
Additional Educational Material
Copernicus Support Office contribution
Lastly, the Copernicus Support Office experts are at the disposal of educators and young citizens to support the development of prototype educational material. They have engaged in several educational experiments in the past and are now working on the development of new and innovative material that will put at the disposal of educators in Europe. They also remain available to support and advise Copernicus Relays and Copernicus Academy members in their educational activities. By providing free and open educational MOOC courses and organising events and competitions or supporting educational and awareness raising activities aimed at young citizens, Copernicus is focusing on European and global youth to give them better and more numerous opportunities for the future. Young, bright, enthusiastic, and engaged Europeans are the ones who will build a future that is greener, more inclusive, and digital. Be sure to monitor Copernicus’ events page to keep up to date with the latest exciting events! With plenty of opportunities to learn, share your vision, meet people, and engage in activities all over Europe, find out what this year has in store for you and join in the #EuropeanYearOfYouth! |
