“On behalf of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) I congratulate Marcia McNutt on her election to a second term as president of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and chair of the National Research Council (NRC),” said John L. Anderson, NAE president and NRC vice chair.

“Over the past several years, I have worked with Marcia on many tough issues facing our nation, including addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, taking action on climate change, and making diversity, equity, and inclusion a priority for the Academies and our nation,” Anderson said. “Her leadership is making a profound difference.”

Since taking office in 2016, McNutt has instituted enterprise-wide changes to further strengthen the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as objective, authoritative advisors to the nation on issues pertaining to science, technology, and health. Internally, she initiated a transformation of the institution’s operations, products, and services including a recently adopted strategic plan and a code of conduct for NAS members. Externally, McNutt has served as a leading voice and advocate on behalf of science. For example, she issued a joint statement, with the presidents of the NAE and National Academy of Medicine, urging action on climate change ahead of the UN’s COP26 climate conference last fall.

In 2021, McNutt was elected to the NAE “for elucidation of lithosphere geomechanics and leadership in earth resources engineering.”

“Marcia is an outstanding leader for the NAS and NRC, and it is a pleasure working with her,” Anderson said. “I look forward to the next several years as we continue the important work of the National Academies.” McNutt’s new four-year term begins July 1, 2022.

Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. Its mission is to advance the welfare and prosperity of the nation by providing independent advice on matters involving engineering and technology, and by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and public appreciation of engineering. The NAE is part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and—with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine—provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
