The UK Junior Water Prize challenges young people (15 to 20-year-olds) from the UK to take a fresh look at local and global water problems and develop a practical and innovative water research project that has the potential to improve the quality of life or the environment.  

Climate change has impacted both the availability and quality of water due to a variety of stressors, including the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, rising water demand against a backdrop of water scarcity, increasing acidification of oceans impacting marine life, and industry and agriculture pollution. This national STEM competition aims to solve those environmental challenges and help students improve their ability to identify and understand local, national and global climate issues, conduct independent scientific research, write compelling academic papers, and present findings to industry experts.

The UK competition is run by The CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) and sponsored by the Environment Agency. The winner will be automatically entered as a finalist into the international competition, Stockholm Junior Water Prize, organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute. 

Over 38 international finalists will compete for the $15,000 prize during the World Water Week in Stockholm.

During their time in Sweden, the international finalists will join in daily social, educational, and cultural events. The thrilling prize ceremony features inspiring speeches from distinguished members of the water community, an entertainment programme, and the famous ‘flag parade’.
