Community flood hub reopens in York

A flood hub has reopened to the community in York to help update residents on progress of flood defence work in the city.

The Wellington Row Community Flood Hub

Originally opened in 2017, the hub, based in an old electricity sub-station in Wellington Row, shows how areas in York will be protected in the future from flooding from the Rivers Ouse and Foss. The hub was closed over the duration of the coronavirus restrictions.

The hub will be open from 10am until 4pm on Mondays and Wednesdays with COVID-safe measures in place.

Environment Agency staff working on the different schemes in the city will be on-hand to answer questions and discuss progress.

Chris Ashcroft, in the York Flood Alleviation Scheme team at the Environment Agency said:

“It’s great to be able to reopen this hub and meet the community again. The hub is a really useful venue to display our flood defence proposals and for people to stop by and chat to us.

“Our reopening comes with the launch of our annual flood campaign, so we’ll also be able to advise people in flood risk areas like York so they know what to do in a flood and how to create a flood plan to help reduce the impact of flooding.”

Details on schemes in Clementhorpe, Museum Gardens and Marygate, and Lower Bootham are currently on display in the hub, along with environmental improvements across the city, and information on the programme of property flood protection products which are being installed in some areas.

This work is part of 18 flood cells across the city where work is being planned using £45 million of funding to better protect 2,000 homes and businesses, secured after the December 2015 floods.

As more flood alleviation options for the city are announced, they will also be put on display.
