Job Description

The Reynolds Creek Collaborative Science and Outreach Coordinator will serve as the primary point of contact for university research collaborators to facilitate execution and documentation of collaborative research experimentation, servicing of field monitoring programs, and conducting outreach activities associated with Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed (RCEW) and Critical Zone Observatory (RC-CZO). The coordinator will work under the direction of the Reynolds Creek Research Coordination Committee as a liaison between Idaho State University and the USDA-ARS, Northwest Watershed Research Center (NWRC). Key responsibilities include: 

Science Project Coordination

  • Coordinates with RCEW Watershed Manager on all collaborator field support needs and visits to the watershed
  • Organizes, schedules, and facilitates meetings of collaborative research groups and projects
  • Contributes to development of collaborative research proposals related to organizing field assistance, timelines, RCEW operational budget, and ARS resources needed for research support
  • Aids in identifying appropriate NWRC Scientists willing/able to serve as a ARS collaborator on RCEW collaborative projects

Experiment and Project Documentation

  • Ensures that all collaborative research projects have documented project plans that address field experimental design, experimental methods, physical layout, timelines, data to be collected, metadata, and data management plan that includes expectations for local data access and archival
  • Maintains database of RCEW-based publications, particularly those without local ARS author

Field and Laboratory Data Collection

  • Provides oversight for collaborative undergraduate or graduate student field work conducted in RCEW
  • Completes specific data collection related to collaborative field or laboratory projects 

Data Management and Analysis

  • Working with NWRC Database Manager, facilitates the access and transfer of collaborative data for storage and archival in NWRC database
  • Working with NWRC Database Manager, facilitates access to metadata associated with collaborative research projects for appropriate storage and archival in NWRC database
  • Contributes data summaries and analysis in support of annual reporting requirements for NWRC and RC-CZO
  • Contributes data summaries and analysis associated with field and laboratory data collection efforts

Outreach Activities

  • Organizes and facilitates field tours and site access for collaborators to promote development of collaborative research proposals and design of experiments
  • Contributes to organizing and/or facilitating RCEW outreach activities such as Getting to Know Reynolds Creek
  • Experimental Watershed, Engagement in Watershed Science, and McCall Outdoor Science School

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field AND two (2) years of relative experience
  • At least 2 years of experience working with field and laboratory data collection and instrumentation related to experimental soils and hydrology field studies
  • Ability to obtain federal job clearance to use facilities, computer networks, and office in Boise, ID at the USDA ARS
  • Ability to walk and carry up to 40 lbs. in cold and/or hot, arid conditions in steep mountainous catchments, with or without accommodation
  • Possess, or able to obtain, a valid driver’s license 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field
  • Knowledge of federal policies and procedures related to facility operations, lab and field safety, vehicle operation, and field communications
  • Experience with water quality sampling and automated sapflux, water, and soil respiration sensors and data loggers
  • Database development and management
  • Field crew leadership or supervisory experience
  • Experience working at the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in Southwest Idaho
