Introduction

DOC is reminding people to connect with nature responsibly and close to home during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Date:  20 August 2021

All DOC facilities are closed at Alert Level 4 however local walking tracks which are accessible within your neighbourhood can be enjoyed responsibly.

DOC operations manager Central Otago Nikki Holmes says this means staying close to home, maintaining social distancing, wearing masks/face coverings and following Ministry of Health guidelines.

“Getting outside, seeing the sun and visiting a nearby walking track or reserve you can really make your day. However any activities that might require the assistance of Search and Rescue services are not to be undertaken. This means places like Roys Peak, which is currently covered in snow, are not appropriate.”

“It’s great people are making the most of the walking tracks in their neighbourhoods. Mt Iron in particular has become a regular part of people’s daily routine. However we do want to remind people that the start of the track crosses private land. Please respect that, keep to the formed track and keep your dogs on a leash.”

Other great local tracks include the Hikuwai Link Track, and the Hikuwai Loop Track – however a section of the Outlet track is currently closed due to a slip, Nikki says.

“Please respect the signage, it is there for both your and others safety.”
