Committed emissions refer to emissions from long-lived fossil fuel infrastructure that is prone to carbon “lock-in”, committing sectors to emissions for years into the future. This is especially relevant for the shipping sector due to the long lifetime of ships that operate for as long as 25 years. Research at Tyndall Manchester uses the latest EU Monitoring Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) dataset to analyse the ‘committed emissions’ of the EU shipping fleet. The research concludes that policy must focus on reducing emissions from existing ships, and should not just focus on new zero-carbon vessels. Watch the video abstract to find out more.
