The Senate of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has appointed deputy board members for Space as well as Energy and Transport as part of the further development of DLR's governance.

At its meeting on 30 June 2021, the DLR Senate, which is made up of representatives from research, industry and government, unanimously approved the appointment of two renowned researchers.

Anke Pagels-Kerp, a physicist from Bonn, will take over as Deputy Board Member Space, and Regine Gerike, a transport researcher from Dresden, will take over as Deputy Board Member Energy and Transport.

"With the appointment of Anke Pagels-Kerp and Regine Gerike, we have succeeded in appointing two proven experts in their respective fields of research as board members," emphasises Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Chair of the DLR Executive Board, "I am pleased that the call for applications was met with such great interest and that these two outstanding applicants were able to prevail in a process in which all DLR stakeholders were involved."

The DLR Senate decided on the new management structure on 3 December 2020. The deputy board members are the technical contact persons for the research programmes and represent them externally. They support the Chair of the Executive Board in the development and management of the respective DLR institutes and facilities. Markus Fischer is currently Deputy Board Member Aeronautics.

Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla thanked the Executive Board members who had temporarily taken over the function of the deputy board members. Hansjörg Dittus will retire from the DLR Executive Board as planned on 30 September 2021 and will hand over responsibility for space research to Anke Pagels-Kerp. Karsten Lemmer will concentrate on his new Executive Board portfolio of Innovation, Transfer and Research Infrastructures. Responsibility for the main research areas of energy and transport is to be handed over to Regine Gerike in the near future.
