The Topical Session "T59. Effects of Carbonate Minerals on Critical Zone Characteristics and Processes" has been organized for the fall GSA meeting as part of the Carbonate Critical Zone Research Coordination Network. The scope of the session is broad and we hope you will consider the session as a venue to present your work. In addition, the RCN will sponsor a gathering one evening at the GSA meeting where everyone interested in this topic may continue informal discussions from the session.
Meeting Details: The meeting is expected to be held in person in Portland, Oregon from October 10-13. The abstract submission portal is now open and accessible at: https://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2021AM/top/papers/index.cgi?sessionid=51562. The submission deadline is July 20, 2021. Some sessions may have the opportunity to offer remote pre-recorded presentations should COVID limit travel opportunities.
Session Rationale: Differing weathering reaction mechanisms of carbonate and silicate minerals are likely to affect characteristics and processes of Earth’s critical zone in distinct ways. A primary example of different weathering includes the congruent dissolution of carbonate minerals, which may form karst landscapes, compared with incongruent dissolution of silicate minerals. These differences can impact soil development, water retention and composition, permeability distribution, vertical scale, morphology and drainage, surface and subsurface biomes, land use, and societal services of the critical zone. Presentation in this session may touch on these or other topics in settings that cross the spectrum of landscapes that range from small fractions of carbonate minerals to nearly pure carbonate settings.
