To coincide with this year’s Volunteers' Week (1-7 June), we want to shine a spotlight on our Student Ambassadors and celebrate the difference they make to the Society, as well as thanking them for all their time and dedication.

RMetS Student Ambassadors provide a valuable supporting role between the Society and universities/research institutions, helping the Society increase awareness about membership and our latest activities within their local networks. Volunteering as a Student Ambassador not only helps promote meteorology as a science, profession and interest, but it can also help boost your CV.

Our Student Ambassador programme has grown in numbers and strength over the past year, with some great ideas put forward to improve the work of the Society and student networks being reinvigorated.

We currently have 23 Student Ambassadors located in Birmingham, Cardiff, East Anglia, Edinburgh, Exeter, Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, Sheffield, Lancaster, Leeds, Manchester, Plymouth, Reading, University College Dublin, University of Missouri, USA and York. RMetS Membership and Accreditation Manager Sharon Stephens said:

"Positive activities such as the extensive promotion of the various initiatives of the Society, really make a difference to the levels of engagement with our student community. I'd like to express my gratitude to our Ambassadors for their hard work and taking the time to promote awareness amongst their network to support the Society.”

Our Ambassadors have also set up a closed Facebook group for our student members. It's a great place for networking and discussion with your peers and where we can keep you updated with any opportunities that may be of interest.

Other volunteering opportunities

The Society is owned by its membership but exists for the benefit of all. After becoming a member there are many ways in which you can get more involved. The Society has nearly 300 volunteers who provide invaluable support for the important work that we do, and we want to extend our thanks and gratitude to them all.

Many volunteers sit on committees, help run national and local meetings, support our special interest groups, sit on editorial boards, and get involved in education or outreach activities.
