ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) congratulates master's student Israel Jaramillo as the first-ever recipient of the AGI Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession. This competitive scholarship provides $5,000 to support an underrepresented minority student in their transition into a geoscience graduate program.

A recent recipient of a joint bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Wollongong in Australia, Jaramillo will begin his graduate work at the Colorado School of Mines in Fall 2021. His research interests include carbon sequestration and petroleum systems, particularly in the eastern Guyana region.

"Being awarded this scholarship means everything to me," said Jaramillo. "It will help me pursue my dreams and give me more time to research in graduate school. This scholarship provides me the impetus to continue my passions in life and help improve diversity in the geosciences."

This one-time, merit-based scholarship invites applications from students who are Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color in the United States studying the geosciences. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be an undergraduate enrolled in a recognized geoscience program with less than two semesters remaining in their geoscience bachelor's degree and self-identified as being of a minority background underrepresented in the geosciences. The scholarship is designed to attract and advance students underrepresented in the geosciences and help them make the critical transition from undergraduate to graduate studies. To make a tax-deductible donation to support a qualified minority student in achieving his or her goal of becoming a professional geoscientist, please visit https://crm.americangeosciences.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=29
