This report introduces national city awards programmes as a tool for national government ministries and partners to promote the realisation of sustainable urban and city development. It discusses the challenges of designing and implementing national city awards programmes, drawing from a review of city awards initiatives in four ASEAN member states, as well as other relevant programmes for promoting sustainable cities. It then concludes with some suggestions on how regional frameworks like ASEAN can be linked to add value to country-based national programmes.
