Evaluation of five planetary boundary layer schemes in WRF over China's largest semi-fixed desert

PBL parameterization schemes play an important role in numerical weather prediction models. We evaluated the applicability of five such schemes in China's Gurbantünggüt Desert using the WRF 4.0 model, assessing performance using gradient tower, turbulence, radiation, and enhanced sounding data collected in July 2019. The model showed acceptable simulation ability, with simulated temperatures lower than observed values, while the ACM2 model showed a minimum cold bias. Under both clear sky and cloudy conditions, all schemes were able to simulate daily variations in 10 m wind speed, with the ACM2 and BL schemes producing the top two results. All schemes reasonably simulated daily variations in sensible and soil heat fluxes. The boundary layer height simulated by all schemes had reasonable diurnal variation characteristics, while the MYJ and ACM2 schemes had the highest accuracy. Overall, ACM2 had the highest universality and was most suitable for the study of meteorological elements in the PBL of a semi-fixed desert.
