Are you looking to explore your ideas about how to address the climate crisis through a PhD, but are concerned about the associated expenses?

The Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) is offering a supplementary scholarship to support the emerging generation of bright PhD scholars from rural and remote areas of Australia, and Pacific Island countries, to contribute to game-changing climate change research, adaption and mitigation outcomes.

This scholarship is made possible by the generous contributions from a group of donors led by Graham Waters, Anne-Marie Waters, and Ray Kiley.

Field of study

Climate Change

  • Within the first 6 months of their PhD at the Australian National University (ANU) or enrolling full-time in a program of study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at ; and
  • Undertaking a PhD project related to climate change, supported by a developed project brief; and
  • Hold an approved ANU HDR base stipend scholarship, at minimum RTP base rate.
  • Can be a domestic or an international student

Selection will be made on the basis of:

  • academic merit and potential based on their academic record, referee reports and other evidence; and
  • relevance of the PhD project, and the capacity of the supervisory team to support research excellence; and
  • applicability of the potential outcomes of the PhD project to solve challenges presented by climate change; and
  • the academic performance of the prospective PhD scholar.

Recipients of the ANU Game Change supplementary scholarship will receive $10,000 total per annum (payments made fortnightly for three years) toward living and operational costs (allocation of the scholarship across living and operational costs to be negotiated by the PhD Scholar and PhD supervisory team). The scholarship is expected to be used for the following purposes.

  • Research (e.g. field work travel, data collection, equipment)
  • Training (e.g. specialist skills required for successful research)
  • International conference presentation and attendance
