The open public consultations were open until 5 February and referred to the revision of:

• EU Emissions Trading System Directive
• Effort Sharing Regulation
• Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry Regulation
• CO₂ standards for cars and vans Regulation (light-duty vehicles)

EU leaders committed to the new emissions reduction target in December 2020. This raised ambition for the next decade will put the EU on a pathway to reaching climate neutrality by 2050 and underlines the EU’s continued global leadership on climate action.

Achieving this ambition will require an investment boost, which will contribute to a green recovery from the current COVID-19 crisis. In this context, the European economic response to COVID-19 offers a unique opportunity to accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral economy.

The open public consultations gave citizens and organisations the opportunity to express their views on the revision of four key EU climate policy instruments, namely:

• 45 682 contributions on the revision of the Effort Sharing Regulation
• 1058 contributions on the revision of the CO₂ standards for cars and vans Regulation
• 493 contributions on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading System Directive
• 236 contributions on the revision of the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry Regulation

The results of the public consultations will be analysed and will feed into the preparation of the legislative proposals to be adopted by the Commission by the end of June 2021. The outcome of the consultations will be presented in the respective impact assessments.
