Five years ago, world leaders forged the Paris Agreement on climate change – an historic accord that committed countries to cut carbon emissions and accelerate the shift to a low-carbon and sustainable future. The Paris Agreement set a vision for a new global approach to the climate crisis and inspired unprecedented actions by governments, companies, investors, cities and citizens.

Over the past five years, progress has been made, but global emissions continue to rise and climate impacts are becoming more frequent and more costly.

On December 12, the UN and the United Kingdom government (President of COP26 in 2021) are hosting the Climate Ambition Summit to commemorate the Paris Agreement’s fifth anniversary and offer a platform for countries to commit to more ambitious actions, such as enhanced nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and net-zero targets. Dozens of national climate commitments are expected to be unveiled as well as some new pledges from cities and businesses.

During this press call on December 9 at 8:00am ET / 14:00 CET, experts in climate policy and business will share their perspectives on the Paris Agreement and expectations for the Climate Ambition Summit. They will also discuss international dynamics, the role of major economies, and how the incoming Biden-Harris administration can shape future climate action.
