The European Commission has published a staff working document that reaffirms the institution's commitment to the 2030 Agenda in the COVID-19 context. What needs to happen to translate this into reality?

As part of the European Semester Autumn package of economic policy recommendations, the European Commission has published a very encouraging staff working document on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In the context of the COVID-19 crisis, the document reaffirms the Commission's commitment to the 2030 Agenda and explains how the institution will take this forward through its internal and external action policies, while also monitoring progress at Member State- and EU- levels.

IEEP is preparing a more in-depth analysis of the document, but our previous work on implementation tracking already suggests that the Commission now needs to develop a robust methodology for tracking the SDG expenditure in the EU budget to ensure the commitments translate into reality.

Stay tuned for our analysis and in the meantime check out:

Climate tracking in the EU budget needs a more robust system
A deal on the budget and recovery plan is welcome – but will it deliver the promised 30% for the climate? Senior Fellow Martin Nesbit draws some lessons from IEEP’s new report for the European Parliament on climate mainstreaming.
