Spatial technology is taking Queensland back in time and forging Brisbane as a world-leading digital city. Seven News featured this news story on the 9th June 2014. Referenced in this story are SIBA's project MIMOSA and appointment of Professor Tim Foresman as the inaugural Chair of Spatial Information at QUT. Dr Foresman, Nat Harrold Director of SIBA member AI3D, and Richard Simpson CEO of SIBA QLD are interviewed.

Professor Foresman was formerly Chief Scientist at the United Nations, and prior to this was head of NASA's Digital Earth program. He seed funded the Digital Earth inspired spinning globe initiative that became Keyhole. Keyhole was later taken over by Google to become what is now known to over a billion users as Google Earth. This has subsequently been adopted as the initial platform for the highly acclaimed Queensland Globe.

Now as the SIBA Chair of Spatial Information at QUT and based in Brisbane, Foreman has been put to the task of supporting a number of SIBA initiatives including Project Mimosa and pitching Australia as the thought leader and centre of an emergying trillion dollar global industry based upon the services and technologies of SIBA members,

Mimosa takes its name from the Latin word for 'mime' or 'mirroring',  Mimosa is about the mirroring of our physical world made of atoms by a digital world comprised of bits.   It is the conversation witnessing the transition of the spatial industry from the long held traditions of map making to bold new frontier of Big Data. Utilising the veracity of Big Data, we can greatly improve the quality and our trust in spatial data, this in turn improves the potential value invested upon this information. New purposes and roles will evolve through these more robust and evidential approach to building this value.  In this new paradigm a more forensic approach will be demanded to build rich digital biographies of places. Through spatial 'lenses' we will build virtual 'time-machines' allowing us to discover and share the deepest stories about places.

AI3D is a SIBA member and director Nat Harrold has been an active member of SIBA's Project Mimosa's Places Past knowledge community. ANZAC Centenary has been targeted by this group of SIBA members for a demonstration of these concepts so we can witness what it was actually like to be living witnesses to the departure of the ANZAC's for Galipolli. These were nation-building moments.

Using data sources created by Australian government agencies, cultural institutions, local historical societies and the families of those who served between 1914-19, the Places Past Project aims to create an immersive, interactive, 3D representation of places and people which can truly represent human behaviour’s, cultural beliefs, practices, places, events and memories.

The goal is to model the complex and often historical contingent processes by which communal senses of place find expression in the built environment and public spaces.
How?
  • Create a collaborative co-ordination of data shareholders to harness sources of historical data to be captured in a federated storage hub - private individuals (crowd sourcing), specialist groups, local councils, the State and Commonwealth governments.

  • Create a forensically reconstructed 4D model of central Brisbane, as it was in 1915, as a prototype for initial learning's and understanding of viability and potential

  • Establish software requirements – websites and mobile apps that repurpose heritage datasets in ways which reconnect this data with the places they describe in situ, in real time.
