Research Project and Data Manager

Position Overview

The University of Kansas (KU) seeks a Research Project and Data Manager to support the scientific mission of the Aquatic Intermittency effects on Microbiomes in Streams (AIMS) NSF-EPSCoR funded Track-2 collaborative project. This multi-institutional interdisciplinary research program spans five states (KS, OK, ID, AL, MS) and eight institutions (KU, Haskell Indian Nations University, K State, U Oklahoma, Idaho State, U Alabama, Southern Mississippi U, U Mississippi). The Research Project and Data Manager will provide assistance, logistical support, and organization; facilitate project wide communication; collate and manage data collected by the project; work with the project’s investigators to design and deliver data products to long-term open access repositories. The manager will also assist with planning of research activities, grant budget operations, administrative procedures and required reporting (including coordinating with our external evaluators at AAAS), and assist with running project programs, including the AIMS Undergraduate Program and On Ramps to Data Science. This position will work with students, postdocs, staff and faculty; if desired, the position has the potential to scientifically contribute to the project, including co-authoring manuscripts and presenting project data. Expertise in environmental sensor and/or sequencing data and geospatial data are required.
 

Job Description
25% Project Management

1.     Assist all investigators with meeting the project research, education, and workforce development objectives.

2.     Communicate with evaluators and Advisory Board and assist with completing required reports.

3.     Assist with facilitating trainings in Software and Data Carpentry at all institutions.

4.     Coordinate a graduate student project to create data modules for training undergraduates at primarily undergraduate partner institutions (e.g., Haskell, Alabama A&M).

 

25% Project Planning

1.     Coordinate annual all-investigator meetings and assist with planning research activities that will be conducted during the meeting.

2.     Assist project team with compiling and creating standard operating procedures (field and lab) and methods to be used consistently across the project.

3.     Travel to meetings and field sites to assist with operations (some overnight travel required).

 

25% - Develop and maintain a data management system to:

track samples and data streams from the multiple sites across the project
ingest data from field samples and laboratory experiments;
secure and backup data; and
make data accessible to project investigators.

 

25% - Collate and organize data (biogeochemical, environmental sequencing, and geospatial data) and metadata (field and laboratory) management, this may include, but is not limited to

1.     Troubleshooting data analysis workflow pipelines;

2.     Training students and faculty in how to organize and access data, QA/QC;

3.     Implementing the data management plan outlined in the project proposal.
 

Required Qualifications

1.     Master’s degree in bio- or geoscience or closely related field and 5 years of experience OR Ph.D. degree in bio- or geoscience or closely related field and 1 year of experience.

2.     Evidence of strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

3.     Previous experience working with large-scale genomics, spatial, or biogeochemical data

4.     Experience in software for managing large data files.

 

Preferred Qualifications

1.     Previous experience integrating and analyzing multiple types of genomic, spatial and biogeochemical data

2.     Demonstrated expertise in python, R, C++, SQL, XML, JSON, or similar programming languages

3.     Experience with relational databases (i.e., PostgreSQL, SQLite) and environmental data structures (ODM2 schema, Ecological Metadata Language, NCBI Sequence Read Archive)

4.     Certification as an instructor through The Carpentries Foundation.

5.     Previous experience managing a multi-investigator project.

6.     Experience working collaboratively with a team of scientists across multiple institutions.

7.     Excellent English verbal communication skills and publication record.
