ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to recognize Dr. Rebecca L. Dodge, Professor Emeritus at Midwestern State University, as the 2020 recipient of the William B. Heroy Jr. Award for Distinguished Service to AGI. Dr. Dodge has longstanding ties to AGI's Environmental Program both as a co-author of an Environmental Awareness Series publication and as a member of AGI's former Environment Geoscience Advisory Committee, where she represented the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).

Dr. Dodge specializes in the application of satellite imagery for resource exploration and for monitoring the effects of landcover change on Earth systems. With co-author Russell G. Congalton, she was a lead author of AGI's 2013 Environmental Awareness Series publication, Meeting Environmental Challenges with Remote Sensing Imagery.

Over the past several years Dr. Dodge has contributed to AGI's education mission through her work on an online professional development course in Earth and Space Science. She designed this online course to address the needs of secondary science teachers who are asked to teach Earth science courses but who may have previous training only in other disciplines. To date, more than 150 teachers have benefited from this course.

"Rebecca's work on behalf of AGI in educating the public has been an inspiration," said AGI Interim Executive Director Sharon Tahirkheli. "She has advanced AGI's mission of service to the geoscience community, and she is an excellent choice for this year's Heroy Awardee."

"Receiving this award is a big honor, because AGI has been such a sustainable resource to me, encouraging and supporting me in my outreach and training for teachers," Dr. Dodge said on receiving the award. "I have always been impressed by the previous award winners in this category. To be included in this way makes me feel like I'm in really good company."

Dr. Dodge earned her B.S. in geology from the University of Texas at Arlington and her master's and Ph.D. in geology from the Colorado School of Mines. She was honored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in 2016 with an Honorary Member Award.

The Heroy Award is named after William B. Heroy Jr.'s exemplary service to AGI. Heroy's professional accomplishments were exceeded only by his love of geology and his commendable modesty in the face of such achievements.
