COVID-19 Relief and Recovery funding for conservation, tourism and infrastructure upgrades at National and World Heritage places

On 1 October 2020 the Australian Government announced funding of $33.5 million from the $1 billion COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund for heritage upgrades across 23 national and world heritage sites. This funding will support 33 projects to improve conservation and infrastructure at these sites, preserving and enhancing them while creating jobs and lasting benefits for tourism.

These projects will help to protect natural environments, upgrade facilities and revitalise heritage sites, ensuring that visitors can enjoy these unique attractions for generations to come.

These projects will involve an additional co-contribution from the states and the Northern Territory.

Below is a short description of each of the 33 projects.

Commonwealth

Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area on Norfolk Island, which is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing, will receive $770,000 to build new visitor information and interpretation infrastructure including signage, and design and develop new directional tools with digital capabilities as part of the site's interpretation plan.

Tasmania

The Overland Track within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area will receive $3,839,000 to construct walker accommodation at three nodes along the Track.

The Walls of Jerusalem site within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area will receive $965,000 to build a new camping area and amenities.

Brickendon Estate, which is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing, will receive $400,000 to facilitate the removal of commercial farming activity from the heritage precinct by constructing a new shearing shed and yards in a different area of the farm. Conservation works on an 1830s shearing shed and yards will also be undertaken to improve the tourism offer.

Cascades Female Factory, which is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing, will receive $2,023,755 to construct a new History and Interpretation Centre to provide an enhanced visitor experience.

Woolmers Estate, which is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing, will receive $233,300 to preserve a large heritage building and an associated heritage farm equipment through physical conservation works.

Northern Territory

Hermannsburg Historic Precinct will receive $1,556,800 to undertake physical conservation works on individual buildings including repairs and upgrades.

Queensland

Magnetic Island within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area will receive $1,500,000 to upgrade the circuit walking track around the Magnetic Island Forts complex.

Daintree National Park within the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area will receive $3,500,000 construct a Culture and Tourism Hub and Visitors Centre.

Raine Island within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area will receive $347,468 to deliver critical physical maintenance works on site. There will also be a digital component which will record and provide interpretation and virtual access given the site's remote location.

Riversleigh, as part of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites World Heritage listing will receive $223,960 to provide physical upgrades to the Day Use Area of the site including, landscaping, building repairs and extensions, walking track upgrades and signage.

Cardwell Mountain within the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area will receive $491,000 to develop 4km of mountain bike trail and trail-head facilities.

Western Australia

Purnululu National Park World Heritage site will receive $350,000 to upgrade the current Visitor Centre including plumbing, electrical and internal fit out works.

Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park, part of the West Kimberly National Heritage place will receive $556,000 to redevelop the Visitor Hub including construction works, landscaping and interpretation signage.

Miluwindi Conservation Park (Kind Leopold Conservation Park), part of the West Kimberly National Heritage place will receive $320,000 to design and construct a new walkway and lookout.

Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area will receive $200,000 to facilitate the the redevelopment of a walking trail and landscape works.

Monkey Mia will also receive a further $50,000 to design and build new interpretation signage about the Shark Bay World Heritage values.

Porongurup National Park, which is National Heritage listed, will receive $419,680 to replace the visitor carpark at Castle Rock walk trail.

Porongurup National Park, will also receive $550,000 to provide physical upgrades to the Granite Skywalk walking trail to minimise trail erosion and environmental degradation and improve visitor management.

Reddell Beach (Jabarragun) precinct, part of the West Kimberly National Heritage place, will receive $800,000 to redevelop the precinct including landscaping and construction works.

Lesueur National Park, which is National Heritage Listed will receive $40,000 to construct a universally accessible walking trail at Cockleshell Gully Picnic Area.

Fremantle Prison, which is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing, will receive $1,556,540 to provide physical repairs and interpretation materials such as signage for the main cell block.

Ningaloo Marine Park, part of The Ningaloo Coast National Heritage place, will receive $150,000 to design and construct a new kayak trail including signage and digital tools.

Cape Range National Park, which is also part of The Ningaloo Coast National Heritage place, will receive $150,000 to refurbish the Milyering Discovery Centre.

South Australia

Burra Mine Site, which is part of the Australian Cornish Mining Sites National Heritage place, will receive $295,000 to provide physical repair works to the mine office as well as design and develop a digital augmented reality experience of remaining non-existent structures.

Moonta Historic Mine Site, which also is part of the Australian Cornish Mining Sites National Heritage place, will receive $4,941,765 to provide physical repair works and interpretation materials such as signage.

Ediacara Fossil Site (Nilpena) which is National Heritage listed will receive $490,000 to provide new access track, boardwalks, trails and viewing platforms.

New South Wales

Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, will receive $600,000 to provide improved educational and interpretative signage and facilities for visitors and education groups.

Gondwana Walking Trails (various sites) as part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, will receive $1,623,545 to upgrade walking tracks across seven sites to improve access including replacement of steps, handrails, track surface, decking and edging.

New England National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, will receive $532,853 to provide major upgrades to visitor accommodation.

Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area (various sites), will receive $595,000 to provide new interpretative material including signage upgrades, information panels, and gateway signs.

Victoria

Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, which is World Heritage listed, will receive $436,500 to facilitate visitor access and support increased tourism by establishing a new water crossing and track upgrade at the Te Rak Lake Condah site.

Mt Buffalo Chalet, within the National Heritage listed Australian Alps National Parks and Reserves place, will receive $3,000,000 to undertake conservation and associated works to protect and restore the iconic site.
