Geneva, 28 August 2020 – Arup, one of the world’s leading design, engineering and consulting firms, has joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to further drive efforts to decarbonize the built environment.

Arup is behind buildings such as the Sky Believe in Better Building, the largest timber structure in the UK celebrated for sustainable innovation. It has also built the first AI and data-driven building in Hong Kong using Neuron technology that enables buildings to dramatically reduce their energy usage.

Arup is working with organizations including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the C40 Cities  Climate Leadership Group to accelerate new approaches and business models to help the world decarbonize and address the climate emergency. Arup will bring the knowledge from work with these organizations to support WBCSD programs including those looking at the Circular Economy and Climate and Energy.

Jo da Silva, Global Director, Sustainable Development: “Our industry is responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions. No one firm alone is going to be able to reverse this situation. WBCSD is an important body, bringing the business community together to find ways to reduce emissions and transition to a sustainable world. We are bringing to the partnership real-life project experience but also increased synergy with other major bodies around the world that are looking to make the built environment more sustainable.”

WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker said “We are proud to welcome Arup to the WBCSD membership. With deep expertise across cities, energy, water transport and digital services, Arup is at the cutting-edge of innovation and sustainability in the built environment. We look forward to working with Arup and maximizing that expertise to help shape a better world.”
