A new study led by researchers at The Australian National University (ANU) provides a clearer picture of conditions during the last ice age when global ice was at its peak – and may even lead to better models for future climate forecasts.

The study demonstrates a new way to recreate ocean conditions in the Atlantic during the last glacial maximum (LGM) – about 20,000 years ago.

The main author Dr. Jimin Yu says that scientists have been trying to reconstruct ocean circulation during this time period for decades, due to the clues it provides about previous CO2 levels and climate change.

“LGM was a time of much lower CO2 levels, lower global temperatures and lower sea levels, said Dr. Yu.

The researchers say that old sea models can not explain recently published data on LGM, which meant that a change in thinking was needed.
