The European Geosciences Union (EGU) recognises the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion as a crucial foundation for the collaborative scientific research that is needed to address fundamental scientific questions, as well as key societal and environmental challenges. The increasing diversity of our membership in all its facets helps to foster fundamental and applied geoscience research to the benefit of humanity and our planet.
Since EGU’s founding, the organisation has worked to ensure equitable treatment for everyone in our community. We have a clearly stated goal to increase diversity at EGU events and on EGU committees and boards. To realise this, we are:
- monitoring diversity of event attendees, nominees/awardees, conveners, invited speakers, and abstract authors, and identifying any sub-populations that are significantly underrepresented;
- encouraging deeper involvement in EGU activities from underrepresented sub-populations;
- funding and promoting EGU travel grants to scientists in underrepresented geographies; and
- reviewing our diversity initiatives on a regular basis.
In addition, in autumn 2018 EGU established a Working Group on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion with the aim of promoting and supporting equality in the Earth, planetary and space sciences, with particular focus on EGU activities. EGU is also collaborating with our sister organisations around the world to raise awareness of the value of diversity, equality and inclusion within the geoscience community, including by organising sessions and meetings dedicated to these issues during the EGU General Assembly and other conferences.
The EGU is committed to improving equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion both within and beyond the geoscience community, and strongly condemns racism or any other form of discrimination anywhere in the world.
