Fauci Warning

Dr. Anthony Fauci today said the United States is now recording about 40,000 new cases a day of Covid-19 and that “it could go up to 100,000 a day” if people continue to flout advice on social distancing and face masks, as the WSJ reports.

EU Closes Borders to U.S.

The European Union will open its borders to visitors from 15 countries as of Wednesday, but not to travelers from the United States, Brazil or Russia. The list of nations that European Union countries have approved includes Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, while travelers from China will be permitted if China reciprocates, as the NYT reports.

Beijing Passes Sweeping HK Laws

Beijing today unveiled new national security laws for Hong Kong that will punish crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison, heralding a more authoritarian era for China’s freest city, as Reuters reports.

Lack of Support at UN Security Council for Iranian Arms Embargo

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the United Nations Security Council today to extend an arms embargo against Iran due to expire in four months, but he faced resistance from China, Russia, and even European allies that share his concerns about Iran’s missile and nuclear activities, as the Washington Post reports.
