Mandated scrappage of old vehicles will give us the advantage of reducing vehicular emissions, provided old scrapped vehicles are replaced with new, cleaner vehicles. An organized scrappage process can also improve resource efficiency by imbuing circularity in automobile manufacturing through the reuse and recycling of parts. Even though many other parameters must be assessed to estimate the health of any vehicle for re-registration, until the infrastructure for the same is developed, establishing 'Age' as the sole parameter is the best move to maximize the environmental benefit from the vehicle scrapping in India.
