UKRI signs statement on sharing of COVID-19 data and research findings

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has joined funding agencies and organisations across the world in committing to the rapid and widespread sharing of research data and findings relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic to help the global effort against the virus.

UKRI has signed a statement containing a commitment from more than 160 organisations, including Wellcome, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and funding agencies and publishers across the world, to make the findings of research relevant to the virus widely available.

Professor Sir Duncan Wingham, UKRI Executive Champion for Open Research, said: “Collaboration and the rapid sharing of research findings and relevant research data is essential to the global response to COVID-19 and the effort to find effective solutions and treatments.

“Signing the statement reaffirms UKRI’s commitment to the principle that the published outputs of research should be made widely and freely accessible to all to allow for maximum reuse and impact.”

The statement contains a commitment for signatories to work together to help ensure that:

  • all peer-reviewed research publications relevant to the outbreak are made immediately open access, or freely available at least for the duration of the outbreak

  • research findings relevant to the outbreak are shared immediately with the World Health Organization (WHO) upon journal submission, by the journal and with author knowledge

  • research findings are made available via preprint servers before journal publication, or via platforms that make papers openly accessible before peer review, with clear statements regarding the availability of underlying data

  • researchers share interim and final research data relating to the outbreak, together with protocols and standards used to collect the data, as rapidly and widely as possible - including with public health and research communities and the WHO

  • authors are clear that data or preprints shared ahead of submission will not pre-empt its publication in these journals

It is a requirement of UKRI funded research into the virus to adhere to the statement and to share research data and research results as soon as possible.
