San Diego photographer and longtime Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego associate John H. Moore captured a confluence of dazzling natural events in the early hours of May 2nd at Windansea Beach in La Jolla.

Bioluminescence created by crashing waves and a setting moon were accompanied by a flashing meteor and an audience of two onlookers.

The red tide behind the bioluminescence has begun to wane after tinting Southern California waters for the entire month of April.  Moore credits luck for the shot, though his being patient enough to wait for moonset at 3 a.m. probably helped.
