Moncton, New Brunswick - Recreational fisheries boost our local economies and provide opportunities for Canadians to come together and enjoy our natural resources. The Government of Canada is pleased to continue to allow opportunities for anglers this year.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announced today the 2019 management measures for the striped bass recreational fishery in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

This year, the retention period for the recreational fishery started on April 15 and will end on October 31, 2019. The daily bag limit will remain the same as in 2018 at three fish per day and the possession limit will remain the same at a total of three fish at any given time. Striped bass retained in the recreational fishery must measure between 50 and 65 cm total length. During the spawning period, which takes place approximately from mid-May to mid-June, fishing will not be permitted in a 6.5 km portion of the Northwest Miramichi River for five days. This area is the only confirmed successful spawning ground for this striped bass population. DFO employees will monitor spawning activity to determine when the closure will take place. Specific dates will be communicated on the Gulf Region’s website to inform the public.

The 2019 management measures are informed by science advice  as well as input from consultations held in the fall 2018 and winter 2019. DFO met with First Nations, Indigenous organizations, fishing organizations, provincial departments and carried out an online questionnaire  for the general public.

Quotes

“Interest in the striped bass recreational fishery in the southern Gulf continues to grow and is having a positive impact on the economy of many coastal communities. DFO will continue to monitor and manage the striped bass population of the southern Gulf sustainably so that access to the resource can be granted while maintaining the Department’s conservation priorities.”

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard
