A team of Arctic scientists – including British Antarctic Survey (BAS) climate scientist Dr Jeremy Wilkinson – are hosting their Arctic Basecamp in Davos this week (23 January) at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting. Their goal is to highlight climate change in the Polar Regions and the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans.

The Arctic Basecamp, provides a platform for the scientists to engage with business leaders and figures in the public eye. On Thursday (24 January), singer and environmental activist Ellie Goulding will visit the camp to hear about state-of-the-art research highlighting some of the dramatic changes occurring in the Arctic and how these impact Arctic and non-Arctic countries alike.

In 2017, Ellie Goulding and friends from WWF visited BAS to learn about the science that underpins our knowledge of climate change, which included a visit to see ice cores collected from Antarctica.

Dr Jeremy Wilkinson, a climate scientist at BAS says:

“Changes in the Arctic will impact us all. It is urgent to share scientific evidence with partipants at WEF. Running events and an exhibit at Arctic Basecamp is key for developing relationships to ensure scientific research underpins political and business agendas around the world.”

Throughout the week, Arctic Basecamp is hosting events on how the Arctic is changing and how to reduce carbon emissions. Guests include Christiana Figueres, Former UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Greta Thunberg, Climate Activist, Suzanne DiBianca, Executive Vice President, Salesforce and Halla Tómasdóttir, CEO The B Team.
