New Water Initiative

Penn State has a long and rich history of engaged, innovative, and impactful water and water-related research. This portfolio of work encompasses the natural, social, and health sciences, engineering, policy and law, communications, the arts, and more. Building on this breadth and depth of expertise, Penn State has launched a University-wide water initiative involving more than 150 faculty and staff engaged in research, teaching, and outreach

This Penn State water community is collectively advancing:

  • sustainable and resilient communities,
  • protecting public health and the environment,
  • driving innovation and technology,
  • guiding social action, policy and corporate transformation,
  • working across critical geographies, and
  • actively using the University as a living lab in the service of meeting the world’s water challenges.

New Faculty Positions

To support this initiative, Penn State has committed five new tenure-track faculty lines to further catalyze interdisciplinary research and elevate its impact.  These positions will be co-funded by participating colleges and the Institutes of Energy and the Environment and will be posted here as they are announced.

At this time we are inviting applications for candidates interested in interdisciplinary research and with expertise in a diversity of water and water-related disciplines, including but not limited to smart water infrastructure and systems, sensors, data collection, analysis, modeling, optimization, prediction, and/or real-time control, research and landscape design in aquatic ecology of riverine, coastal, or wetland systems. Requirements are position-specific and can be found in the more detailed descriptions of the following priority areas:

  • Faculty Position focused on Water-Related Resilience (Assistant/Associate Professor in the College of Arts and Architecture's Department of Landscape Architecture): https://psu.jobs/job/92405
  • Faculty Position in Smart Water Infrastructure and Systems (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in the College of Engineering's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering): https://psu.jobs/job/92425
  • Hyperspectral Imaging Engineering Faculty with a Focus on Water Resource Sensing (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in the College of Engineering's Department of Electrical Engineering): https://psu.jobs/job/92758
  • Faculty Position in Environmental Policy focused on Water (open rank, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Liberal Arts, School of Public Policy): https://psu.jobs/job/90333
