The Earth Hall of Fame Kyoto has named the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as one of two honourable 11th Inductees. The honour is given in the name of Kyoto, the birthplace of the Kyoto Protocol. 

Founded in 2010, The Earth Hall of Fame commends in perpetuity those who have made significant contributions worldwide to the preservation of Earth’s environment and consensus-building agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol.

The Earth Hall of Fame Kyoto Council said it selected the IPCC because: “It produces Assessment Reports about scientific knowledge on climate change and provides them to policymakers. It also released the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 ºC in October 2018, the Special Report on Climate Change and Land in August 2019, and the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate in September 2019 and contributes to promoting international countermeasures against global warming.” 

“In May 2019, the IPCC’s 49th Session was held at Kyoto International Conference Centre and the 2019 Methodology Report (IPCC Kyoto Guideline) was adopted, on measuring greenhouse gas emissions of each country, which is essential for implementing the Paris Agreement,” it said. 

After the ceremony on Tuesday 11 February 2020 a commemorative display will be set up in the Kyoto International Conference Centre to honour the IPCC’s work for the global environment.
