Two projects being led by the NOC have been shortlisted for the fifth annual Mersey Maritime Industry Awards. The winners will be decided by a judging panel and a public vote which closes at midnight on Friday 15 February.

WireWall (category 11)

WireWall has been nominated in the ‘Positive Impact’ category. This award is made to an organisation whose remit or business model is to bring about positive measurable change, whether this is to the lives or living conditions of individuals, the community or in terms of campaigns, projects and initiatives that are changing perceptions about the industry.

WireWall is an innovative and cost-effective system to help optimise sea defence design and early warning processes, reducing construction costs and ultimately protecting coastal communities. The project - led by the NOC’s Dr Jenny Brown - is being delivered as a partnership between the NOC and HR Wallingford. You can get all the latest updates from the team on Twitter by following @WireWall_NOC

In 2018, the WireWall project was shortlisted for ‘Research Project / Team of the Year’ and ‘Environmental Port Project of the Year’ at the International Dredging and Port Construction Awards for the wave overtopping and coastal hazard monitoring system. The team received a special commendation, which is no small feat when you consider that they were up against the might of the US Army Corps of Engineering.

anyTide UK (category 10)

The anyTide app is nominated in the ‘National Impact’ category. This award is presented to an organisation making a positive national impact in the maritime sector, whether it’s substantial growth, job creation, cutting edge innovation, thought leadership, or increasing exports. anyTide UK is a mobile app created by the NOC that provides detailed tidal height and current predictions. The app provides tidal predictions around the North Western European Shelf, with particular focus on the British Isles. It is available for both Android and iOS devices.

anyTide was developed in conjunction with Winchester Innovation. For further information about the NOC’s business development and commercialisation activities, contact us at nocbusiness@noc.ac.uk
